Steps to take when Migrating from a
Novell to a Windows NT/2000 Network
- First, create an "Accounts" directory off of a
drive on the NT server and give all users FULL access
to it. Copy all files from the "accounts" directory on
the Netware server (including subdirectories if there
are any) over to the same locations on the Windows NT
Server.
- Check the "FILES=" settings on the NT Server as
well as any NT workstations. This needs to be done on
any NT, Win 2000, and XP operating systems (Windows
2000 and XP are already set correctly to "FILES=40" by
default).
- NT workstations
- Open a command prompt, go to the
%systemroot%\system32 directory and edit the
config.nt file to show "FILES=40."
- Workstations using Windows 95 or Windows 98 may
also need to be updated
- Edit c:\config.sys and add "FILES=120."
- Remove ALL traces of NetWare on the server
(if the NT server was/is attached to the Novell
network), and on each workstation. This means
uninstalling the Netware client and deleting all
references to IPX/SPX. See the How to Completely Uninstall Novell
NetWare Client32 document.
- Turn off Opportunistic Locking on the NT server
and any NT workstations.
- NT Server (All versions including 2000 and XP).
By default, the necessary DWORD is not created in
the System Registry and opportunistic locking is on.
A key must be created with a value of zero (0) to
turn it off:
- NT/2000 Server Service Entry:
in
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
\LanmanServer\Parameters add a REG_DWORD of
EnableOplocks and set the value to zero.
- NT workstations (All versions including 2000 and
XP), a registry change must be done but the entry is
slightly different. Again, a key must be created
with a value of zero (0) to turn it off:
- NT Workstation Service Entry:
in
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
\LanmanWorkstation \Parameters add a REG_DWORD of
UseOpportunisticLocking and set the value to zero.
- At each workstation map drive letter F: to the NT
Server's drive. Do not root map the \ACCOUNTS
directory to a drive letter.
- Create a shortcut icon with \ACCOUNTS\AVMAIN.EXE
in the Command line and \ACCOUNTS in the Working
Directory line.
- Any NT Workstations should have the 'Idle
Sensitivity' on the Miscellaneous tab of the icon
properties set to "high" for optimal performance.
- Install First Resort version 9.96 or
higher. As of 5/02 version 9.98 is preferred.
- Open a command prompt on the NT server, change to
the new "accounts" directory and launch the software
by typing "avmain" and pressing enter.
- Log in with a user code that has access to
System Setup functions.
- The network type MUST be changed correctly
within the software and all files and indexes
rebuilt prior to anyone else accessing the data or
index corruption may occur. To make this
change, go to the H-H-E screen from the Application
Selection Menu and change the "Network Type" (and
other fields as necessary) as follows:
- First Resort versions 9.89 and higher:
- Set the "Network Type" to W
- Set the System Locking Type to M
- Set "Use Novell Print Queues" to N
- Set "Use Novell TTS" to N.
- If the Lock on Read field is visible
(v9.89-9.93), set it to N.
- First Resort versions prior to v9.89:
- Only version 9.83 is recommended prior to
v9.89, and that version should only be used when
suggested by First Resort Support. On v9.83 set
the "Network Type" field to M.
- All other Novell-related functions in First
Resort must be disabled.
- At HHS screen the 'Default Printer Type' must
be changed to L for Local.
- All information pertaining to Novell Print
Queues should be deleted from the HHS screen.
- Use of Novell TTS should be disabled as
follows:
- On ALL First Resort versions and for
ALL business codes go to the HA screen,
enter the business code and on the bottom of
page 1 in Business Setup set "Use Novell TTS" to
N.
- On First Resort versions prior to v9.89, at
the HHE screen set "Use Novell TTS" to N.
- Before allowing anyone to use First Resort, go to
H,F (from the Application Selection Menu) and
rebuild all files and indexes for All Business
Codes.
- All workstations must have printers captured. On
NT workstations use the Net Use command:
"Net Use
LPT#: \\computername\sharename /persistent:yes". A
batch file for each group/user can be created to
facilitate this. Regardless of workstation operating
system, each workstation can have access to two
printers, and the LPT port assignments for the entire
business are assigned on the H-H-S screen within First
Resort. (ie: If allowable local parallel printers is
set to "12", each user has access to one printer on
lpt1, and one on lpt2 - if it's set to "13", each user
has access to one printer on lpt1, and one on lpt3,
and so on.)
- Start using First Resort.
